Chicken bones have a very good nutricional value in them for parrots, But caution is to be used
I was at my vet's yesterday, picking up meds for my parrotlet (Skyler), and the place seemed very quiet, so I asked, "why so quiet?" The receptionist, said that the vet was in surgery, removing chicken bone fragments from someone's parrot. I told her that a number of our members' birds like to gnaw on chicken bones and she warned me to never let Kumiko have a chicken bone, the potential risk is certainly not worth any amount of fun or nutrition he could get from the bone.
The surgery is going to cost the owner a minimum of $400 (Canadian) for making this mistake.
P.S. Due to client confidentiality, I was not given any further information regarding the size of the bird or who owned it, suffice to say my vet was upset with the owner for allowing this to happen. The animal is now recovering, luckily the surgery went well, but this is not always the case with birds that must undergo general anesthesia.
