Hi all. Hoping you could help me with some ideas. Nos is on a mostly pellet diet with veggies, fruit and seeds aswell. I've been reading up and all i can seem to find is lists of foods NOT to give him. The poor guy needs a bit of variety in his life, but I'm terrified of giving him something that might hurt him. I've also found cotradictory information online that makes me feel even more paranoid! Eg: some people say feed them potatoes, others not. I find myself too anxious to try new foods with Nos but i don't want him to miss out on tasty treats! Does anyone know where i could find a list of foods I CAN give Nos? An accurate one? Would REALLY appreciate any ideas, and so would Nos Otherwise he is doing very well overall. He's like a child to me ;D thanks everyone x

I've been visiting another forum called AvianAvenue.com and they have a thread just on what and what not to feed parrots. It's been a great resource. The thing with potatoes is that they need to be cooked before giving them to your parrot...not that you can't give them at all. Here's a link to the feathered food court: forums.avianavenue.com/feathered-food-court/

And sweet pototoes are fine raw. It IS confusing. With very few exceptions for every thing you see listed somewhere as bad, it will be listed somewhere else as good.
As far as I can tell, the only things that are REALLY universally on the bad list are avocado, chocolate, caffiene and alcohol.
Somewhat consistently listed are that potato and tomato are better cooked. Citrus, like tomato, can be too acidic. Spinach can cause too much iron. Most of the rest of it seems consistent with common sense and reference to human nutrition -- stone fruit pits and apple seeds aren't good, celery strings can cause problems, mushrooms spoil easily, as do sprouts. Raw Garlic and onion are iffy raw due to the sulphur compounds that make them sharp/smelly. Raw beans are supposedly iffy with sprouted OK -- Raw beans can also be bad for people. I don't feed Scooter things that I wouldn't eat or that have to be prepared a certain way for me to eat. He does have a pretty varied repertoire, though. I have actually fed him:
Apple Anaheim pepper Asian pear Bell pepper red, yellow, orange, green, "mini" Blueberries Blackberries Beets Broccoli Carrots Cherries Coconut Collard Greens Corn Cucumber Daikon radish Dandelion Greens Figs Gooseberries Grapes JalapeƱo pepper Kiwi fruit Mango Nectarine Papaya Pasilla pepper Peas (green) Pears Radishes Rasperries Romaine Lettuce Sugar snap peas Snow Peas Sprouts of various kinds Strawberry Swiss chard
