***Her first post:
Please send healing thoughts to our foster Eclectus, Gemma. She has not been eating since Friday night. She ate her dinner just fine, and then I put in a birdie pinata for her. She attacked it and had fun tearing it up. She went to bed, slept OK, but hasn't eaten since. She tries, but can't seem to swallow. She is drinking a little, and she is going to the vet first thing in the morning. Our vet was unavailable today, and the emergency vets don't have avian experience. Her crop looks red and angry. I think she must have something stuck in there.
Please keep her in your prayers - we are terrified.
***Her post after hearing from the vet:
Hi, all:
Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers about our little girl.
The vet just called about Gemma. She has gotten some sort of non-metallic toxicity from the pinata that she chewed up on Friday evening. The vet thinks it may be from formaldehyde in the paper used to make the pinata. There was a paper sticker on the pinata that said "Mexico" on it. He said they don't regulate formaldehyde there the way they do in the U.S. He said that formaldehyde can be used in paper manufacturing.
There is nothing in her crop, and she is responding to supportive care. She still isn't eating anything, but they gavage fed her late this morning, and she is mouthing TOP pellets now, although she isn't eating them. Her initial bloodwork was "within normal limits". Her white count is slightly elevated, but the vet thinks it is due to the stress, not infection. They sent additional blood and the pinata to Virginia Tech for testing. They are also testing for many other things, to make sure that we treat her appropriately. They are testing her stools and they did a crop swab to send as well.
CAUTION - I am posting a link of the pinata here, but I DID NOT buy this toy from this vendor. I am not accusing anyone of anything, but feel that other bird parronts may want to re-evaluate whether or not to use them until her tests come back.

Again, thanks for your caring and support. Our little redhead is getting better.
