Hello!
My GCC turns 1 next week and the past week or so I've noticed that he's been a bit more nippy then normal and stubborn. I've also noticed that the ends of his feathers are jagged like he's chewing them. He isn't plucking them out but I noticed small feathers around his cage and are so perhaps he is moulting? He has also been preening himself alot so I've been making sure he's getting misted or taking a bath daily. I was looking online and it said that a possibility could be that he's going through sexual maturity. Besides that, he is eating and playing normally. I bought some new toys to rotate into his cage in case it's boredom and started hanging millet sprays in his cage too (which he loves)! One of the websites suggested to remove any toys that have mirrors from his cage - thoughts? He's only home alone for a few hours and is out of his cage from the minute we get home until we go to bed - he's definitely spoiled! thanks!! Diane

I think most GCCs reach sexual maturity later than 1... Scooter is now 1 year and almost 3 months and we don't think he is. He was nippier for a while when we first got him at 11 months, but I think that was just an adjustment period thing. Is there any regular pattern to the nippiness? Sometimes scooter has feathers that look as if they were sheared off, but he definitely doesn't pluck, I think some of htem just look kind of funny when they aren't attached to a bird. IT is moulting season...

I do notice that when he is preening more and he breaks off those case coverings off his feathers that he tends to be nippier then usual. That makes sense if it is moulting season because his feathers seem extra sensitive lately. Watson's feathers look like they were sheared off too...not plucked. Thanks for the info!

Cinder get's very nippy also during moulting, Not sure about reaching sexual maturity, but them being naturally nippy, we don't get the up side for when it's their moulting time I agree, with just NOT using mirror's at all, because they can become attached, think there is another bird on the other side and it encourages mating behaviour etc.
