Hello Everyone, I've always wanted a parrot and have done a fair amount of research. I have some concerns if I'd be a good match because of my job. I fly for a major airline and live by myself. Which mean the parrot may be alone for two days. Today while looking at parrots the sales person who seemed very educated when it came to parrots suggested a gcc. He said they are fine by themselves for a few days. He also said I could board the gc with them while I was gone. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

Hi Mike... Personally i would not suggest that you get a parrot if you are gone for two days, maybe in the future.. But if the parrot is constantly moving back and forth for board it will become very stressful and possibly create a health issue such as plucking. Green cheek conure's are labelled as "velcro-parrots" and while sociable, they need attention, just like any other animal. Also Nutrition would be a problem, they need fruit's and veggies, grain and nuts... Vegetable's daily, I give Cinder fruit's two times a week because of the high sugar content, and grain and nuts along to give variety, If you are not there to make the enviroment clean and tidy.. Such as cleaning the newspaper, daily interaction, daily breakfast and supper etc... I'm afraid that the parrot will end up not very happy I hope you stick around.. and get more opinion's on this... Before making a decision, And even after you will stick around...and learn more about them I hope i have helped abit...

Hello Tatianna, Thank you for your reply. The last thing I want to do is be unfair to a pet bird. ( my fish get along fine without me for a few days:-)

Yes i agree.... Do you have anyone else living with you currently ? like a girlfriend or roommate ? Maybe you can work something out with them.... Or set something up with you're parents.. but they must all understand the responsibility of a parrot, And what they are toxic too... Such as perfume's and Nonstick/Teflon ...

If you can work something out so that the bird has fresh water and fresh food as needed, the bird may be OK. You say you may be away for two days at a time, but how often? Can you afford to board him when you are gone? Or get a birdsitter in? With a big cage and a lot of toys, I'd guess the lack of social interaction might not be the biggest issue, especially if the bird was used to that kind of schedule. But I'd be uncomfortable not having someone check in fairly often. They are fairly delicate creatures and can get into trouble easily, at least that's what I've been reading.

Thanks for the help. I'm looking at a person to come in on the days I'm away and change the water and food. If that looks like it will work I "may" give it a try.

I have several friends that Parrot sit. But I wouldn't get a parrot if you are not going to be home much. They are more needy than dogs and need their flock (a.k.a.- you) home with them and able to interact with you at least a couple hours a day. And Green Cheeks wouldn't be good alone for days with no company.
Think of it this way...would you like to locked in a cage with no one there for several days? Even with toys, it really is not fair? My flock all want their time with my family. Hailey will over groom herself when stressed, i.e. when my husband hasn't spent a good amount of time with her or when he is stressed. Ace starts fights if he hasn't had his personal time with us.
