Hello!!
I recently noticed that our 9 month old GCC, Watson's, nails had gotten very sharp and his beak. We purchased a cuttle bone and perches that are shaped and have a surface that claims to help keep their nails down. However, Wastson could care less about the cuttle bones and we have tried several different flavors.
I read that some people trim their nails while others do not recommend it. Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks! Diane

when you cut a birds nails, you need to have you're parrot towel trained and two people to do it, one to hold the parrot and the other to trim the nails. You cannot cut the quick or else you will have alot of bleeding, you can use stuff to clog the bleeding. I would suggest you take Watson to the vet first to show you how to cut his nails. The beak's dont need to be trimmed, inless they have a scissor or other kind of beak, but the trimming should be fine with alot of toys and things for him to chew and play with

Also, those sandpaper-y perches can wind up abrading their feet more than the nails. If you are using them, you should check his feet regularly to make sure they aren't getting sore. Does your bird have trimmed wings? If so, whoever is doing that may also be able to do his nails. I have read that some people are able to train their birds to allow them to file their nails with an emery board, a little at a time, while perching.
