Hi everyone. My brother and my dad have been complaining non stop, about not being able to use teflon, i literally banned it from the house. which causes SOME fights, but i told them when im gone they can knock themselves DEAD with teflon, but while me and my parrot are here it will NOT step a freaking step into the house. Reason because it makes me sick, and it also will kill Cinder. They think i lie about me being sick about teflon, seriously i can't breath around it and get light headed etc. Anyway's they have been look for an alternative and they found this: www.lecreuset.ca/Products3/Enameled-Cast-Iron/What do you all think ? Our pans are really horrible and old, they tend to burn anything we cook, we have a hard time just cooking eggs ! Although i am a pretty lucky one, and actually can cook on them without doing little to no damage to the food. technically i don't want anything that even has the simplest mention of Teflon, or Non-stick in this house. But apparently this is but isn't non-stick ? Can someone tell me their experiences about this, or what you can find on this for me ? Do you think it is safe?

This looks like it would be okay.......I have Club Aluminum, and some pretty old T-Fal non-stick. My GC is not near the kitchen, but for about 20 years I had birds very close to my kitchen.....cooked with non-stick and never had any problems. I didn't know of the dangers and have only known that there could be a problem about 5 or so years ago. I think iron cast can add iron to your diet too.

thank you.
And yes Teflon is toxic, it can kill a parrot in an instant, it fills the lungs up with water or a fluid, and well... they die.

Enameled cast iron makes great Dutch ovens, but it isn't nonstick really. And it is VERY expensive. Stainless steel is a good alternative which is not nonstick but is easy to clean. It is also fairly pricey. There is a new class of nonstick coatings that are ceramic based and are safe for birds. Cuisinart makes one they are marketing as a green product -- I got two pieces and it performs very well. It's not cheap, but it's way more affordable than Le Creuset, and it will make a good substitute for the coated pans they are currently using. You only really need nonstick for a skillet and to make delicate sauces. For most other tasks, they probably won't miss the nonstick if they have good stainless as an alternative.
"Teflon", actually any PTFE-containing nonstick coating, which is most of the coatings you see on cooking pans these days, produces toxic fumes if it is heated past a certain temperature. That temperature is higher than typical cooking temperatures, but it is easier to get to that temperature than many people think, especially if a pan is heated empty or sparsely filled on the stove. I causes a condition called "Polymer fume fever" in people which produces flu-like symptoms and it can kill birds quickly. Not every usage of a PTFE pan will cause disaster, but it can happen with just a moment of inattention and the birds usually don't survive. IMO each person needs to weigh the risks and benefits. After thinking about it a lot, I got rid of ALMOST all my coated cookware and the remaining two pieces will be used only with great caution for very specific low heat tasks. However, it cost me as much as the bird and cage to replace all my cookware.
